Most people arrive here having read a specific number somewhere and wanting to know what it does. That is the harder way round.

A binaural beat is not a sound you hear directly. Play 200 Hz in one ear and 210 Hz in the other and your auditory system perceives a third, phantom pulse at the difference — 10 Hz. That difference is the number that matters, and it is the number every page in this guide refers to. The carrier tones themselves are largely interchangeable.

The difference frequency is chosen to sit in the range your brain already produces during the state you want. That is the whole idea behind entrainment: EEG studies reliably show a frequency-following response, where cortical rhythm shifts toward an external periodic stimulus. What is far less certain — and worth being honest about — is how strongly that shift translates into the subjective outcome you are after. Effects are real but modest, and they vary a lot between people. Treat frequency choice as a starting point to experiment from, not a prescription.

The Solfeggio and 432 Hz frequencies further down are a different category entirely. They are carrier tones drawn from a musical and spiritual tradition rather than difference frequencies drawn from EEG research, and the claims attached to them are cultural, not clinical. They are covered here because people ask about them and deserve a straight answer — each page separates what the tradition says from what has actually been measured.

Before you press play

Stereo headphones are not optional. This is the single most common reason people conclude binaural beats "do not work" for them. The effect exists only because each ear receives a different tone in isolation. Play the same file on a laptop speaker, a phone speaker or a smart speaker and the two tones mix in the air before they reach you — there is no binaural beat left, just a slightly wobbly hum. Any ordinary wired or wireless stereo headphones or earbuds are fine; you do not need expensive ones.

Quieter works better than louder. The beat is a perceptual artefact, not a volume effect. Set it just loud enough to hear comfortably underneath your own thoughts. Turning it up adds nothing and risks your hearing.

Give it 15–30 minutes. Sessions shorter than about ten minutes rarely give the effect time to settle. Sleep programmes are the exception and can run all night. Consistency over two to four weeks tends to matter more than any single session.

Some people should check first. If you have epilepsy or a seizure disorder, are pregnant, wear a pacemaker, or are being treated for a psychiatric condition, talk to your doctor before using rhythmic audio entrainment. Never listen while driving or operating machinery — several of these frequencies are specifically intended to make you drowsy. Binaural beats are a complementary wellness tool, not a treatment for any medical or psychological condition, and nothing here replaces professional care.

Common questions

Which frequency is best for sleep?

Delta, 0.5–4 Hz, is the range your brain produces during the deepest stage of non-REM sleep, and 2 Hz is the usual starting point. In practice the transition matters more than the destination: many people do better beginning in theta (around 6 Hz) while they are still settling and letting the session step down into delta, rather than dropping straight to 2 Hz while their mind is still busy.

Do I really need headphones?

For binaural beats, yes — without stereo separation there is no beat at all, only two tones mixing in the room. How long before I notice anything?

Most people report something within the first session — usually a settling or a slight heaviness — but that is as much about sitting still with your eyes closed for twenty minutes as it is about the audio. The more meaningful question is whether two to four weeks of consistent use changes how easily you fall asleep or settle into focus. Track that rather than chasing an immediate sensation.

Is there real science behind this?

Partly. The frequency-following response is well documented in EEG research, and a 2019 meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay and colleagues found a small-to-moderate effect on state anxiety across the studies available. Beyond that the literature thins out quickly: sample sizes are small, protocols vary wildly, and blinding is difficult. Anyone promising you a precise percentage improvement is inventing it. Can I use a frequency that is not listed here?
