What Does the Science Say?

111 Hz is not a brainwave frequency. This is the single most important thing to understand about it, and most pages on the subject get it wrong. Brainwave entrainment works on the difference between two tones — the 0.5–100 Hz range covered elsewhere in this guide. 111 Hz is a carrier: an audible pitch, roughly A2 on a piano, that you hear directly. Its reputation comes from archaeoacoustics. Researchers measuring the acoustic properties of Neolithic chambers — the Hypogeum of Ħal Saflieni in Malta, Newgrange in Ireland, and others — found strong resonance in the region of 110–112 Hz. Cook and colleagues (2008) then reported EEG differences, including a shift in relative prefrontal activity, in subjects exposed to 110 Hz compared with neighbouring frequencies. That study is real and worth taking seriously. It is also small, has not been widely replicated, and does not establish that the ancient builders chose the frequency deliberately.

What the Claims Get Wrong

111 Hz attracts a large amount of confident assertion — that it regenerates cells, that it is a “holy frequency”, that it triggers endorphin release. None of that has support. The cell-regeneration claim in particular appears to be a garbled restatement of unrelated research, and there is no mechanism by which an audible tone at 111 Hz would act on tissue.

This matters beyond pedantry. If a page tells you 111 Hz regenerates cells, it is not a page whose other claims you can rely on. The genuinely interesting thing here — that some Neolithic chambers resonate in a narrow band, and that one controlled study found an EEG difference at that band — is more interesting than the invented version, and it does not need embellishing.

How to Actually Use 111 Hz

Because it is a carrier rather than a difference frequency, you use it differently from everything else in this guide. There are two sensible approaches.

As a plain tone. Play 111 Hz in both ears and simply listen. This is closest to what the archaeoacoustic research was actually testing — a resonant pitch filling a space, not a binaural illusion. Speakers are fine here; headphones are not required, because there is no binaural effect to preserve.

As a carrier for a theta beat. Set 111 Hz in one ear and 117 Hz in the other, and you get a 6 Hz binaural beat riding on a 111 Hz carrier. This gives you a genuine theta entrainment session that happens to use the archaeoacoustic pitch. Headphones are required for this one. In practice the carrier choice makes little difference to the beat, so treat this as aesthetic preference rather than as compounding two effects.

Low Frequencies and Your Equipment

One practical note: 111 Hz is low, and a great many earbuds and laptop speakers reproduce it poorly or not at all. If it sounds thin or almost inaudible, that is your hardware rather than the tone. Over-ear headphones or a speaker with a real driver will give you the pitch as intended, and it should feel present and slightly physical rather than faint.
