What Does the Science Say?

10 Hz is the centre of the alpha band and the closest thing the human brain has to a default rhythm. Close your eyes in a quiet room and alpha rises across the posterior cortex within seconds; open them and it drops away. Hans Berger recorded exactly this in 1924 in the first human EEG, which is why alpha is still sometimes called the Berger rhythm. Individual peak alpha frequency sits somewhere between roughly 8 and 12 Hz, varies from person to person, and correlates with some measures of cognitive performance — which is part of why 10 Hz gets singled out. Huang and Charyton's 2008 review of brainwave entrainment found alpha-range protocols among the more consistently reported, though the underlying studies are small and heterogeneous. Claims that 10 Hz raises serotonin specifically are not well supported and are best treated as folklore rather than physiology.

What Alpha Actually Is

Alpha is best understood as the rhythm of a cortex that is switched on but not being driven. It is not sleep, and it is not concentration — it is the idling state in between, and the one most people mean when they say they want to relax without switching off.

A 2019 meta-analysis by Garcia-Argibay and colleagues found a small-to-moderate effect on state anxiety — the in-the-moment kind, before a procedure or an exam — which is precisely what an acute intervention would be expected to help with. The evidence for trait anxiety, the persistent disposition, is much weaker.

Read that as: useful for taking the edge off a specific anxious hour, not a treatment for an anxiety disorder.
